The Thompson School of Marine Transportation offers Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees in Marine Transportation Operations and Vessel Operations & Technology as well as an Associate of Science (A.S.) degree in Small Vessel Operations.

All three degree paths prepare students to pursue U.S. Coast Guard licenses that lead to varied maritime career options.

Marine Transportation Operations major is a international license that you get afterwards. You'll obtain a third mates unlimited license for unlimited tonnage meaning that you can be the mate or captain of any vessel of any size doesn't matter. There's no restrictions to in a sense.

Vessel Operations and Technology is I think one of the best majors at Maine Maritime Academy. You get a lot of hands on skills at the waterfront. You're getting to operate on tug vessels, ferries, offshore supply vessels, wind farm technology vessels and sailing vessels, which is what I'm really into.

So my major is the Vessel Operations and Technology program. So we end up earning our 1600 ton license. So we do four years at the school. And after two years, we sit for our 200 ton Mates' license. For the Marine Transportation Operations program, they receive a lot of the same hands on experience that the Vessel Operations, and Technology program receives. So they take a lot of the same classes like firefighting, ship handling, nautical science. So we share a lot of the same classes, but I'd say vessel operations and technology have more hands on labs.

I think all the deck majors at Maine Maritime Academy are really excellent. My favorite part about that is you get to be out in the light of day. You get to see the world pretty special career to go into.
